Poppy Lennox is a London based artist who creates unique works on paper and wood incorporating gold leaf, paint and embroidery.
Lennox is drawn to movement, colour and light. Often taking influence from the patterns of nature, she is interested in how the objects of her compositions interplay and the space between them. Symmetry, geometry and pattern sequencing play a large part in her work, creating both a sense of harmony and tension.
Lennox has long held a fascination with stitching into unexpected materials. Polaroid photographs became the initial canvas, which then developed into embroidered wooden pieces and works on paper. The repetitive, meditative threading of each piece can take many hours and is an important part of the process. The needle piercing through the surface of a wooden ‘canvas’ allows the subject of each piece to become eternally bound to it. The incongruity of stitching into wood – the delicacy of the thread weaving its way through such a hard structure – is an important element that draws Lennox to this process. The resulting effects are rich and textural works that seem to float three dimensionally from their surface.
Lennox studied Fine Art at Newcastle University. In 2020 she was invited to create the 5th limited edition artist’s label for renowned London wine merchants Berry Bros & Rudd’s ‘Good Ordinary Claret’, following in the footsteps of Paul Smith and Luke Edward-Hall. Her work is in private collections in the USA, Middle East and UK and she has recently completed a commission for Gordon Ramsey’s restaurant at The Savoy, London.
In 2021 Lennox participated in the London Creative Network / Space Studios professional development programme and The Other Art Fair, London, More recently she hosted a workshop with arts and mental health charity Hospital Rooms.
Lennox’s work can currently be seen at 99 Projects London as part of the ‘Rebirth’ show, curated by Lee Sharrock (until 27th March) and ‘SHE/HER/HERS’ at Oakland Gallery, New Brighton (until 5th June). A joint exhibition with Dawn Beckles is scheduled for September 2022.
